Hello all,
many folks have recommended the RME Fireface 800 (http://www.proacoust...l.php?pId=16204) to me as a solid audio interface.
I am very new to Pro Audio technology.
Can anyone explain what 56 "channels" of record/playback on an audio interface means?
What does "24-bit" mean?
I know that the 192 kHz refers to the sample rate at which the audio interface allows on your DAW, but I am lost as to what the other numbers mean. Can you help out?
Also - does anyone own this unit and use it with Logic 8?
Any issues?
I am on a iMac 10.6.6. Snow Leopard. 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5, with 4 GB DDR3 RAM.
zp.

First: Iīm not sure I have a sync problem with my setup, Iīm trying to find out if itīs my Camelaudio software (the new softsynth alchemy)that causes the out of sync situation.
But I went through my set up to get feedback on the way it is set up (pardon my english)
And please notice: I donīt know much about sync/clocking..
So if my set up (as described) seems to be ok I tend to think that it is Alchemy that is making the trouble. After reading other users feedback there might be a problem
I havenīt had any issues generally with my set up a part from the fact that the system seems to make bad sounding records sound bad! I might sound like a joke but it isnīt and it can be very confusing
Iīm on a mac (Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz dial core intel Xeon)
I donīt get and "out of sync" message
but when it swift from auto sync to master in the RME panel the input status starts to chance between lock and sync in the input status on hte RME pane
But I went through my set up to get feedback on the way it is set up (pardon my english)

I used to own the RME FF 800 and used it with Logic 8 until I upgraded to Apogee, which I think has better i/o and preamps than the RME. But the RME is very good and may have been upgraded to have better i/o by now. I just hate using their repair service in the states, which IMHO, is a pain.
56 inputs and outputs means 10 analog line inputs combined with front and back, 8 analog line outputs, 4 mic preamp inputs, 2 sets of ADAT i/0 equaling 32 i/o of lightpipe and 2 i/o for SPDIF.
24 bit is the preferred bit rate for recording studios using digital audio and is the way digital information is read by the analog hardware device, that then sends it to the computer. The higher the bit rate the more precise the analog wave is read.
I believe Logic Pro processes at 32bit when you're inside the program.
With the RME I doubt you will ever have any success recording at 192khz sample rate. You'll be happy to sample at 96khz and really 48khz is more than enough for most music.
As I said I used the RME FF 800 very successfully with Logic 8, but I prefer the newer Logic 9 studio to anything I used in the past.
Hope this helps.

Audio Sync is the conversation between the AD/DA converter device you're using and the DAW software you're using. When the clock signal is not right, you loose sync.
Camelaudio is a really cool piece of software, but it is buggy as hell. Sometimes everything is fine; other times is simple crackles and causes the out-of-sync message.
That's been my experience.

Yeah I noticed that but didn't want to embarrass you.
And 'Bro' hasn't been back to check for answers since the day he posted his.
Still, your answers were very sweet and heartfelt.
