An eBay seller had a bunch "new in box" for what seemed to be a decent price, so I snagged one. I've enjoyed using some of the similarly named algorithms in my PC3X, so it made sense to get this for my Nords (which have no built-in verb). Great sounding device! I like the interface, too. Much nicer than my old MX200.

I've got both the Rumour and the Mangler in addition to my PC3X and PC2X. Invaluable additions when I just want to throw a new sound on the mix without having to go in and change FX settings... Also great for running other modules and acoustic guitar through to get that K shimmer.

Whadja pay for yours?

Stephen

I paid $419. Looks like the seller still has some on eBay. Really was "new in box", too. I was pleasantly surprised!

4-88...just purchased a brand new Kurzweil 4-88 from Kraft Music...play it for x45minutes and the LED 'wipes'---cannot 'click' up a different instrument sounds(you're BLIND)...no where to go with the various sounds? ....you can play sounds but 'nothing' on the LED, the....terrible problem; LED screen 'scrambles' and 'breaks up' unless you shut the machine down and re SET it?? ....and now they (KRAFT or Kurzweil) won't stand behind it....or replace it or guarantee this new machine....they want me to use the warranty for repair and the repair stores are more than 100x2=200 miles away?? --that's round trip and I just received the "warranty" four and half weeks late::: in the mail--during the interim-- Kurz WARRANTY; all within the x30 days while I was in contact with Kurzweil Support(Woodland Hills,CA)running TESTS on its operation --all withing the x30day guarantee period?? ....a big loss in money! ...watchout...cannot use it performing, will have to continue to use my old (x8yrs) Kurzweil SP88....WHAT would you do? ....they aren't moving.... 4-88 keyboard-very expensive....

I would suggest that you get in touch with Jean at Kurzweil support (I presume you are in the US) - email support@kurzweil.com. I presently own five different PC series Kurzweils - and support has been excellent. Jean will diagnose whether or not anything can be done without sending it for repair. Tha majority of Kurzweil dealers do not have the ability to repair locally (one reason I've bought from Sweetwater in the past, even though I'd have to send the unit to them). I am an Electronic Tech for close to 50 years, but the circuitry is complex - you want someone who really knows the product (this is true of almost all current keyboards, not just Kurzweil).

Also, note that you are posting a keyboard issue in the FX category. I'd suggest taking a few moments to learn how to use this site, and then post in the appropriate area where you will get the views that will be most helpful.

By 4-88, are you talking about the SP4-88?

Otherwise, as Jim said, best contacting Kurzweil directly.

Hi Stephen. After watching these for years I finally broke down and got one NIB. Should have it in a week. Is this unit still worth discussing here? My idea is to use it primarily with synths and experiment with unique soundscapes. Couldn't afford a KSP8 these days and thought the Mangler would do what I need. Also using an Ensoniq DP/4+. Your thoughts? Any recommended settings/engines to try out with specific sound types? Thanks.

Mark,

The biggest thing I'd say to experiment with is whether you have it as an 'Insert' or as a 'Send/Return'. If you use it as an Insert and you're running it through a mixer, then play with whether or not you're mixing in the dry signal as well. Without these experiments, you're only hearing 40% of what the unit is capable of.

Looking forward to hearing more once you've got the unit plugged in.

Hi Stephen. The Mangler arrived at the office today. The only pieces of the studio I have unboxed to date are the Ion and a guitar, but that should be enough to at least check it out this weekend. Funny, the unit was purchased NIB from eBay, but it shipped directly from Kurzweil. Pretty goo deal at half-price! Last time I checked he had one left if anyone else is interested.

Personally, I find the Rumour to be far more useful (for my uses). If you really get on well with the Mangler, you might consider adding a Rumour to your arsenal one of these days. Double trouble...

Have fun with those Laser Verbs. There's nothing else like them by any other manufacturer. Both Rumour and Mangler have a good selection of them.

I understand your preference. Wish I could afford both. I decided that the Mangler effects would be more advantageous for synth madness in a live band situation, especially when I already have a TC unit for verbs. (Plus, it's hard to find a Rumour for sale these days). Since I have no PA gigs lined up for a while, I think I'll set up the console in my room and run all of my effects from a patchbay/Aux sends and wet-only signals back into individual channel returns. I only have remote hardware. No computer/recording rig so I have to be a little creative working with limited Aux sends and channel inserts. Will have to wait until the first weekend of February before I can set everything up and see what kind of cabling madness I need to do/buy. Will be fun......
